Principal's Welcome

Sacred Heart is a Kindergarten to Year 6 Catholic coeducational school, which currently caters for 212 students from 190 families. The school has a great deal to offer students and their families.
Sacred Heart Primary School primarily serves Mary Help of Christians Parish, South Woden (which covers Chifley, Farrer, Isaacs, Mawson, Pearce and Torrens) but, subject to availability, also offers places to children from other areas.
Sacred Heart Primary School is set in spacious grounds that are well maintained and cared for. Students have both grassed and hard-top playing areas, as well as access to climbing equipment, handball courts, hall and library. Sacred Heart is well resourced in respect of all aspects of school life. The buildings are well maintained and a recent refurbishment has further modernised the school facilities, providing improved learning opportunities for all students.
Sacred Heart is known for its strong community spirit and commitment to family. Parents are always welcome at the school and they are actively involved in their child's school life through Class Activities, Assemblies, Discos, Fete, Colour Run, Masses, Sporting Events, Excursions, Round Table Conferences, etc.
Literacy and numeracy are key focus areas in our teaching with staff active in implementing the Australian Curriculum and Evidence-based pedagogy to ensure relevance and effectiveness for all our students. We believe in a culture of inclusion where meeting the special needs of students is seen as the classroom teachers responsibility, supported by the Learning Support Team. The well-being of our students and their families is supported through programs including 'Stop, think, do!' (Yrs K-2) and Rock 'n Water (Yrs 3-6) within the 'Be You' Framework.
Our well resourced Library operates as a functional centre for learning to support an inquiry learning approach. Teaching programs are explicit, and both support and integrate the curriculum of each classroom. Students engage in challenging learning activities that help them understand, inquire into and interact with the world. ICT has become a major emphasis at Sacred Heart with a range of hardware available such as ipads, chrome books, IWB and an extensive range of STEM equipment. Authentic integration of ICT into our curriculum is seen as an priority.
Active participation in all sporting activities is encouraged and all children participate in a structured Health and Physical Education program. Students also have the opportunity to participate in interschool sport events. Sport clinics are organised and conducted by trained specialists from Canberra sporting associations providing new experiences for the students across many sports.
Sacred Heart has a specialist Music Teacher who works with all students throughout the year. The program offered is vibrant and engaging, and educates the students on the basic principles of music, drama, and media arts. Private tuition in a range of musical instruments is also offered to families.
Sacred Heart also offers a specialised program in Italian culture. The aim of the program is to promote cultural understanding and provide a base for easier acquisition of other languages students may study in the future.
Sacred Heart offers a focused program in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) which students attend all year. The program helps promote these important curriculum area. The teacher works closely with the class teachers to integrate the content with classroom learning.
We acknowledge the importance of choosing a school and we believe that with our dedicated staff, relevant educational focus, strong parent involvement and support centred in a family atmosphere we can offer an exciting educational experience.
Thank you for expressing an interest in enrolling your child at our school. I look forward to meeting you in the near future.
Yours sincerely,
Anne Staines
